Roman Hamrlik is the winner of this year’s Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy as voted on by members of the media covering the Montreal Canadiens.
A native of Zlin, Czech Republic, Hamrlik leads the Canadiens with a total of 1,696:36 minutes of play. He has averaged 22:29 minutes of ice time per game. He ranks second this season among Canadiens defensemen with a total of 129 shots on goal and a +6 plus-minus differential. Hamrlik has blocked 187 shots, first on the Canadiens and fourth in the NHL. He led all NHL defensemen in February with nine assists (0-9-9).
Hamrlik beat out teammates Hal Gill and Mathieu Darche. Hamrlik finished with 114 points in the voting, Gill and Darche had 80 and 79 points respectively.
Not as much of a favorite of mine as Darche, Hamrlik has been invaluable on a depleted Habs blueline this year. Here’s hoping that Darche comes back next year to have another crack at winning the Beauchamp. It’s doubtful that the Hammer will get a chance to defend his title.
The trophy’s namesake, Jacques Beauchamp, was the sports editor of Journal de Montreal, as well as a sometimes practice goalie for the Habs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as an Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award Winner in 1984.
